Enhancement adjustments
Every cleanup option — deskew, denoise, binarize, crop, line/hole removal, color dropout, and color mode.
This is the complete reference for every enhancement control in Scanix Desktop. The same cleanups live in two lanes — the Viewer Enhancements panel (interactive, per page) and the template Scan & Image tab (automatic, every page) — and the tables below give each option's exact label, its values, and its default. For when and why to use each lane, see Image enhancement; for the capture side of the template tab, see Scan settings.
Two lanes, shared cleanups
The Enhancements panel (Viewer, right sidebar) and the template Scan & Image tab expose overlapping controls. Their labels differ slightly because one is hands-on and one is a saved configuration. Each table below notes which lane it documents.
Viewer Enhancements panel
Open a document, click Enhance in the top toolbar (or pick the Enhance tab in the right sidebar) to reveal the Enhancements panel. Every control updates a live preview; nothing is written to disk until you press the apply button. The panel is split into collapsible sections.

Transform
Manual geometry. These buttons act on the page in front of you immediately in the preview.
| Control | Action | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Rotate 90° CCW | Rotate the page 90° counter-clockwise. | 0° |
| Rotate 90° CW | Rotate the page 90° clockwise. | 0° |
| 180° | Rotate the page 180°. | 0° |
| Flip Horizontal | Mirror the page left-to-right. | Off |
| Flip Vertical | Mirror the page top-to-bottom. | Off |
When a rotation is set, the panel shows the current angle (for example, Rotation: 90°).
Auto-Corrections
Automatic geometry toggles. All three are off by default.
| Control | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-deskew | Intended to straighten a tilted page. | Off |
| Auto-rotate | Detect and correct page orientation. | Off |
| Auto-crop | Trim page borders conservatively. | Off |
Auto-deskew in the Viewer panel is not yet active
The Auto-deskew toggle in the Viewer Enhancements panel is present but does not yet straighten the page. If you need automatic deskew, turn it on in the template's Scan & Image tab instead (the Auto-deskew (straighten tilted pages) checkbox), where it runs on import. The manual Transform rotate and flip buttons work normally.
Image Enhancement
Pixel cleanups that recolor the image without changing its size.
| Control | Values | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpen | On / Off | Off |
| Edge Enhance | On / Off | Off |
| Denoise | Off, Fast, Median, Bilateral | Off |
| Despeckle | On / Off | Off |
| Auto Level | On / Off | Off |
| Invert | On / Off | Off |
| Sepia | On / Off | Off |
| Binarize (B&W) | On / Off | Off |
The Denoise selector replaces a plain on/off toggle with four modes:
| Denoise mode | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Off | No denoising. |
| Fast | A quick, light pass. |
| Median | Salt-and-pepper speckle. |
| Bilateral | Noise reduction that preserves edges. |
When Binarize (B&W) is on (and the Threshold override is off), a Method selector appears:
| Binarize method | Notes | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | A single fixed cutoff. | Default |
| Otsu | Picks the cutoff automatically from the whole page. | — |
| Sauvola | Adapts the cutoff locally — good for uneven lighting. | — |
The Threshold control sits in the same section. It is Off by default; switch it On to expose a slider.
| Control | Range | When On | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threshold | 0–255 | Sets an explicit black/white cutoff (starts at 128) | Off |
When Threshold is On, its explicit value takes precedence over the Method selector above.
Morphology
Post-binarize shape cleanup. This section is collapsed by default.
| Mode | Effect | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Off | No morphology. | Default |
| Erode | Thin strokes. | — |
| Dilate | Thicken strokes. | — |
| Open | Remove small speckle. | — |
| Close | Repair broken strokes. | — |
Structural Cleanup
Removes form furniture. This section is collapsed by default; all toggles are off.
| Control | What it removes | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Remove horizontal lines | Horizontal ruled lines. | Off |
| Remove vertical lines | Vertical ruled lines. | Off |
| Remove underlines | Underlines beneath text. | Off |
| Remove border | A surrounding page border. | Off |
The panel notes: Auto-binarizes if upstream Binarize is off. Each of these toggles works on its own — you do not have to turn on Binarize (B&W) first.
Adjustments
Continuous sliders. Double-click a slider's value to reset it to its default.
| Slider | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | -1 to 1 | 0 |
| Contrast | -1 to 1 | 0 |
| Saturation | -1 to 1 | 0 |
| Gamma | 0.1 to 5.0 | 1.0 |
Color Mode
A three-way switch for the page's output color.
| Option | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Keep full color. | Default |
| Gray | Convert to grayscale. | — |
| B&W | Convert to black & white. | — |
Color Dropout
Drops one ink color so a form's pre-printed lines and boxes disappear, leaving the entered data. Collapsed by default.
| Option | Default |
|---|---|
| None | Default |
| Red | — |
| Green | — |
| Blue | — |
Panel footer and apply
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Undo | Step back one change (also Ctrl+Z). |
| Redo | Step forward one change (also Ctrl+Y). |
| Reset | Clear all changes back to defaults. |
| Apply | Commit the enhancement when the page is not yet recognized. |
| Apply & Re-OCR | Commit the enhancement and re-read the page when it already has OCR text. |
The eye / eye-off button in the panel header compares the result against the original (tooltip Show original / Show enhanced). The apply button only appears once you have changed at least one control. For why the label switches between Apply and Apply & Re-OCR, see Image enhancement.
Template Scan & Image tab
When you build a template, its Scan & Image tab pre-decides the cleanups that run automatically on every page captured or imported with that template. The controls are grouped into cards; every option below is off (or set to its first value) by default. The capture controls (Resolution, Color Mode, Paper Source, Duplex) are covered in Scan settings.

Auto-Corrections (template)
| Control | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-deskew (straighten tilted pages) | Straighten a tilted page on import. | Off |
| Auto-rotate (detect page orientation) | Detect and correct page orientation. | Off |
| Auto-crop (trim borders) | Trim page borders conservatively. | Off |
| Remove blank pages | Discard pages detected as blank. | Off |
| Crop white background (keep only content) | Trim all surrounding white to keep just the content block. | Off |
| ID card detection (crop / split front + back) | Auto-detect ID cards and crop / stack / split them at import. | Off |
Auto-crop vs Crop white background
These are two intensities of the same idea. Auto-crop keeps a normal document's margins and only trims a large white border; Crop white background removes all surrounding white to keep just the content — ideal for a card or receipt on a big white page.
When ID card detection is on, it owns cropping — Auto-crop and Crop white background are disabled (tooltip Handled by ID-card detection — turn it off to use the general crop) — and a follow-up selector controls how multiple cards are handled:
| When multiple cards are detected | Result | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Combine front + back onto one page | Stack both sides onto a single page. | Default |
| Keep front + back on their own pages | Each side stays on its own page. | — |
| Split each card onto its own page (bed scans) | Split each detected card onto its own page. | — |
Image Enhancement (template)
| Control | Values | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Color Mode | Color, Grayscale, Black & White | Color |
| Binarize (convert to black & white) | On / Off | Off |
| Denoise (reduce noise) | On / Off | Off |
| Sharpen | On / Off | Off |
| Despeckle | On / Off | Off |
| Contrast | -100 to 100 | 0 |
| Brightness | -100 to 100 | 0 |
Form Processing (template)
| Control | What it does | Values | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line removal (remove ruled lines) | Strip ruled lines from forms. | On / Off | Off |
| Hole removal (remove punch holes) | Erase binder punch holes. | On / Off | Off |
| Text enhance (improve OCR accuracy) | Sharpen text for recognition. | On / Off | Off |
| Bleed-through reduction | Suppress ink showing through from the back. | On / Off | Off |
| Crop borders (remove black edges) | Trim black scanner edges. | On / Off | Off |
| Color Dropout | Drop one ink color from a form. | None, Red, Green, Blue | None |
